A Guide to Cumbrian Sounds

North West Folk music clubs picI'm hoping some of your members may visit the lakes from time to time. If so please let them know they would be more than welcome to attend various singarounds and plug and plays I am involved in. It always makes a night special when new faces arrive to join in, especially if they are particularly talented, although all levels of ability are very welcome.

I run an open showcase every Sunday at 5.00 at The Beer Hall Staveley - home of Hawkshead Beer. There are unplugged sessions at the Elleray Hotel, Windermere every 1st Tuesday and at The Watermill Inn & Brewery, Ings every 3rd Tuesday, as well as simple mic Sessions at The Kings Arms, Hawkshead every 3rd Thursday and Snooty Fox, Kirkby Lonsdale every 1st Thursday.

We often have tourists come along who happen to play and pride ourselves in making anyone and everyone very welcome. Although the venues don't offer gigs cold to people sending CDs etc they often do to participating musicians as a result of seeing them perform, so it is worth while coming along. Fun making music, and enjoying the unexpected is the essence of most of the sessions.

There is also a website, Mostly Acoustic Cumbria which details venues and sessions all over the county although folk isn't necessarily as welcome at all of them, and details should be sought out before travelling specifically to those.

For particularly competent musicians, especially singer songwriters there is a fabulous venue, on the 1st Sunday up at The Penrith Players, where they often have paid guests. Mitch Mitchelson runs those sessions. More details can be obtained on the Plug 'n Play website.

Hope to see you or any of your members soon.
