A Little Bit of Martin Carthy
North West Folk music clubs picSince the sad demise of Westhoughton Folk Club, Bolton has lacked a venue for top class performers. Well no more. Starting last January Bromley Cross folk club has filled the void.

Situated at the Railway pub on Chapeltown Road, the venue has hosted acts such as John Kirkpatrick, Bernard Wrigley, Trio Threlfall and Steve Turner. The latest guest was the legendary Martin Carthy, a great supporter of the smaller clubs.

Despite refusing a request for ‘Sovai’ as he didn’t have his ‘little fiddler friend’ with him aka Dave Swarbrick, Martin provided a fine evening of entertainment, starting with ‘John Barleycorn’ and ending with ‘The Devil and the Feathery Wife’. In between there was ‘Young Morgan’, ‘Swaggering Boney’, ‘Bill Laurie’ and ‘The Blind Harper’ amongst others, as well as a few instrumentals, ‘The Third Man being the most noteworthy.

Martin seemed really engrossed in his material and looked genuinely surprised to see 90 people applauding wildly as he finished. Hopefully it won’t be too long before he’s back.

The club now takes a break for the summer apart from the sing arounds on the 1st Friday of the month. Guest nights recommence on 18th September with BBC folk musician of the year Tom McConville accompanied by David Newey. Support will be provided by duo Seat of the Pants.
