Not long ago, someone with too much time on his hands, estimated that the World has 162 million web sites. Here’s one more. The question, you’ll no doubt be asking, is why?
To those not in the know, folk music is thought of as very much a minority interest, where the only participants are men with beards and chunky knit cardigans. Anyone attending the numerous gigs, singer’s nights and festivals would dispute that. There’s loads of the stuff out there.
There are also many websites that cater for the genre, but the information isn’t always well presented and it’s often out of date. How annoying is it to see an artist you like featuring at a venue near you, only to realise that it was two months ago?
Finding a starting point, if you’re searching for information is also a challenge. The purpose of this place is to address the above issues.
Performers - Are you looking for work or just for places to play? If you have your own website or Myspace page, we can link to it. If not, give us the information to put in your profile.
Venues - Have you got a gig to publicise or do you want to know what artists are available for hire?
Writers - Is there an artist, subject or gig you’d like to apply your keyboard to? Or maybe you’d like to suggest an idea for an article.
Then hit the contact link at the top right of the screen and let us know. The same applies if there is something you’d like to see on the site.
For those who’d rather listen than play, there is an extensive list of gigs, events and singers nights for you to attend. It isn’t exhaustive, not yet anyway, but items are being added all the time, so check back often.
There’s also a store which includes CD, DVDS, downloadable music, tutorial items, instruments and accessories.
Also, check out the forum, where you can swap, opinions, information and advice with other site visitors. You’ll need to be a member in order to post, but it’s free and registering takes about a minute or so.
The site has been accepted by the NewsNow, the UK’s leading news aggregator so the headlines from articles will share web space with those from the national papers and the specialist music press. So if you’re an aspiring writer, or just have a project of your own that you’d like to plug there’s potentially a large audience out there for you.
The site is starting to attract visitors and feedback has been good. So have a wander round, check back often and let us know what you think.
