| Black Umfolosi 5 | I had never seen Black Umfolosi before and didn’t know what to expect, but was soon involved n the group’s enthusiastic performance.
This is a brilliantly choreographed show embracing gentle swaying and energetic dancing, ending with the famous gum boot dance which is based on the rituals of the South African mining regions.
Black Umfolosi 5 were founded in 1982 in Zimbabwe and named after the Umfolosi Omnyana River in South Africa. Their style is Imbube music or township acappella, the dances being based on street dances.
The five young men come across as extremely personable individuals, who greatly enjoy what they do and their enthusiasm is infectious and uplifting. Black Umfolosi are doing the rounds of the folk festivals this summer. Be sure to catch them.
