Tom McConville was brought up in the Globe pub, on Scotswood Road in Newcastle. As it says on his website, you can’t get more Geordie than that. But he’s overcome that disadvantage to become one of the World’s premier fiddle players and is the current BBC folk musician of the year.
McConville’s music owes much to his roots in the North-East and to Scottish and Irish influences, but there is unmistakeably something of his own in the interpretation of a wide variety of material. Add in a warm voice and a dry wit and he’s one of the most likeable performers around.
The list of fellow musicians testifying to his talents reads like a who’s who of British folk music. Seth Lakeman, Kate Rusby, Vin Garbutt and Allan Taylor amongt them.
‘I think Tom plays as Tom is, with honesty and passion, and an obvious love for the fiddle and traditional music. Long may you keep on bowing, Tom,’ wrote Dave Swarbrick. Praise indeed.
Tom McConville appears at Bolton’s Bromley Cross Folk Club on Friday 18th September, with guitarist David Newey. Ticket information can be obtained by clicking here.
