The Big Celidh held at Mellor Brook last Saturday made £750, an increase of over 50% on the corresponding event last year. Held as part of the Big National Celidh for the WaterAid charity, the evening was deemed a great success and preparations are already under way for next year. Seamus Heffernan got in touch with NorthWestFolk to give an account of proceedings.
'We had great support from local business, dancers themselves, and the venue. The food was donated by Sandersons bakers from Blackburn, the venue was offered rent free, the musicians and caller all gave their services for nothing as did the bar and venue staff and many friends and dancers donated raffle prizes. Blackburn Rovers donated a signed football.
'Those of us involved are thrilled at the response. At 10pm, the Union Street Band were joined by Mellor Brook's own fiddle group, The Palatine Fiddlers and, in co-ordination with all the other dances across the land comprising The Big National Ceilidh, we danced to the North East tune, Jamie Allen.
'For several other dances, the band were also joined by Niamh Boadle on bodhran who, one week earlier, had won through to the final of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award.'
