The Rather Nice Madness of Chris Rowbury
North West Folk music clubs picNatural voice tutors are barking mad. That’s a fact. I’ve been to many workshops and I’m sure it must go with the territory, because none of them are on the same planet as the rest of us.

Chris Rowbury is a prime example. His warm up routine has to be seen to be believed. Imagine 60 people of a certain age pretending to be happy puppies or drumming their heels to awaken the moles underground and you get the general idea.

Chris is a lovely man, by the way, and a very talented and experienced tutor, but I repeat, barking mad. Despite not being well on the day he taught us lively versions of 50’s and 60’s classics such as Bye, Bye Love, Baby Love, King of the Road and finally You Really Got me by the Kinks.

The last one proved to be too much for us to sing in a seven-part harmony. Each group managed their own bit, but combining them just wasn’t going to happen.

If anyone has considered trying these workshops I can highly recommend them. There’s no need to read music, or even have that good a voice. It’s hard work but great fun.

Chris has another one planned for February in Manchester (sold out now – Ed). Further details on his website. This event was organised by Bury Acapeelers, a local choir, who are looking for new singers.
