And much of it seems to be at the Beech Inn. As well at the Monday night sessions mentioned previously there are sing arounds on the first and third Wednesday of the month with an emphasis placed on traditional material. There’s also (spiffing idea this) a beginners session on the last Tuesday of the month, with things at a more relaxed tempo and lots of repeats.

It’s not looking bad in Barnsley Either

Michael Parkinson comes from Barnsley, but you shouldn’t hold that against them. Well not this weekend anyway as it’s time for Barnsley Acoustic Roots Festival which will be held over the coming days.

There are singarounds, workshops, street entertainment and a concert line up, that amongst others features, Eliza Carthy, Jez Lowe, Demon Barbers Road Show, Lau, Martin Simpson and Tom Doughty. It all sounds reet gradely.

Ships Ahoy!

Ex sailor and submariner Tom Lewis is the guest at the Midway Folk Club in Stockport on Monday. Tom lives in Canada these days but tours in the UK every two years or so. His songs have a distinct flavour of the sea about them (although they aren't by any means all sea shanties) and he’s contributed a lot of highly regarded new material to that genre. Tickets are available on the night at £8 or contact the club for pre-booked prices.

But if You Prefer to Stay at Home

Then tune into Ali O’Brien’s Sounds of Folk programme on Monday night where Southport based folkies Chris and Siobhan Nelson are the guests.

Tuesday sees Phil Graham, Terry Ferdinand from Bishop FM and girl group Bryony featured in a packed programme on Chorley FM’s folk show hosted by James Blatchley.

Bored of Easter Eggs?

Then get yourself along to Wigan Folk Club's annual all-day Easter Monday Big Singaround at the Boulevard, Wigan, WN1 1LD. (Hands up who’s looking up the date now?)

Sing a song, play a tune, recite a poem or monologue or sing your own lyrics. It doesn't have to be folk, anything is fine, as long as it's acoustic and unplugged. New songwriters especially welcome. Or just listen and join in the choruses. Strictly over-18s. Free admission.
