Scolds Bridle Featuring Dave Walmisley
North West Folk music clubs picTwo lovely ladies from the Fylde, Liz Moore from the posh end (Lytham) and Sue Bousfield, from the common bit (Cleveleys) make up Scold’s Bridle. The girls are proud of their roots and have been stalwart performers in folk circles, most notably at Fylde Folk Festival, for some years.

The sea and fishing figure large in their repertoire and they opened the set with two songs of women waiting for their men to return – Safe Home by Anna Shannen and Allan Taylor’s Come Home Safely.

They draw from a wide circle of contemporary writers. There were three compositions by the wonderful Alan Bell, The Siren Sea, Sailors Sty and Alice White, a beautifully sung solo from Liz.

Sounds of the Night, from Ian McKeowan, tells of his boyhood listening to the sounds of Fleetwood docks through his bedroom window.

There was more light hearted stuff too. A whimsical song from the pen of Bill Caddick about unicorns and how maybe, we’ve lost the ability to believe in magic, the O.M.O song which tells the tale of Fleetwood Doris and In Praise of the Menopause by Lynn Herrald, which had the audience roaring.

The night ended with a version of Lowlands, which raised the rafters.

Scolds Bridle are a personable duo with an enthusiasm for what they do and I for one will be looking forward to their next visit.

The girls present their themed show We are The Women Left on the Shore at Wirral Folk on the Coast next weekend.
